IUS ROUNDUP: Grenadier softball off to great start in Region XII tourney

The Indiana University Southeast softball team advanced in the NAIA Region XII Tournament on Wednesday by winning two games at home.
The fourth-seeded Grenadiers (31-10) defeated fifth-seeded Union in the tournament opener 6-0, followed by a 4-3 win over top-seeded Milligan.
Against Union, Charlestown graduate and IU Southeast freshman Whitney Zollman was the winning pitcher. She threw four innings with four strikeouts.
Grenadier senior Michelle Reyher went 3-for-4 with a double. Also for IU Southeast, Jeffersonville graduate Paige Dickey and freshman Amber Pedersen each were 2-for-3 with a stolen base.
Against Milligan, Grenadier junior Kacie Deweese was the star of the game. With IU Southeast trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Deweese tied the game up with a two-run single. She then scored the go-ahead run later in the frame.
Deweese wound up 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Reyher, Dickey and Floyd Central graduate Shana Andres each went 2-for-4. Andres stole two bases, Dickey had a double and a stolen base, and Reyher had a double.
Zollman also earned the victory against Milligan, giving up two hits in 3 1/3 innings.
IU Southeast plays Virginia-Wise in the winners’ bracket at 2 p.m. today. If the Grenadiers win, they will play at 1 p.m. on Friday. If they lose, they will play in the losers’ bracket at 11 a.m. on Friday. All games will be at IU Southeast.
BASEBALL
• Grenadiers lose opener of Region XII tourney: On Wednesday, IU Southeast fell to Union in the opener of the NAIA Region XII Tournament in Kingsport, Tenn., 6-1.
Jeffersonville graduate Brad Nickles was the losing pitcher. The Grenadiers’ right-hander pitched 7 1/3 innings, yielding four runs (all earned) on eight hits and one walk. He struck out two.
IU Southeast’s lone run came in the first inning. The Grenadiers (31-23) will face either Tennessee Wesleyan or Brescia in the losers’ bracket tonight.
