Southern Indiana United’s U11 Strikers hit the target this past weekend when taking the White River Classic in Noblesville.
Paul Duckworth’s troops came home with a three-game unbeaten record, after wins against Fishers SC (5-0), Hoosier FC (3-2) and Carmel United (3-2).
The boys got off to a flyer against Fishers, helped by a Parker Davidenkoff hat trick, as well as goals from Jacob Hedrick and Alex McLaughlin. Strikers then came from behind to beat the Hoosier FC White team 3-2 after being down 1-2 at the half. Goals were scored by Jacob Hedrick, Adam Cantrell and Matthew Siebert.
In the championship game on Sunday, SIU beat Carmel United Premier White, a team which had not lost a game this season. Despite an early goal by Zach Yagle, the U11s found themselves down 2-1.
However, another fight back ensued after Davidenkoff tied the game up with a free kick, followed by a Hedrick shot to the right corner late in the first half. Strikers held on with a great defensive effort in the second half to win the championship, 3-2.
RED DEVILS CAMP
While one set of Red Devils (Manchester United) were celebrating this weekend after winning the English Premiership, another set of Red Devils were gearing up for a soccer camp to be run at Jeffersonville High School from June 9-12.
The camp will cater for middle school boys (entering grades 6-9 this fall) from 6-8 each evening. It will feature four training sessions conducted by certified area high school and club coaches. The main focus of the training sessions will center around the technical development of players who will be joining high school and club teams in the fall.
“All are welcome, no matter what high school they will attend,” says Jeff High School boys’ soccer coach Ryan Bixler, one of those involved in the camp. “Sessions will cover both field player and goalkeeper technical skills, and each player will leave the camp with a solid understanding of the technical demands placed on players at the high school and club level.”
The cost of the Red Devils Soccer camp is $45, which includes a camp T-shirt and soccer ball. For further information, contact Ryan Bixler at 812-282-6601 ext. 257 or rbixler@gcs.k12.in.us.
KERMIT’S OLYMPIC BOUND
Our congratulations go out to Louisville soccer referee Kermit Quisenberry, who has been selected to officiate at this summer’s Olympic Games in Beijing.
Kermit, who now resides in Florida, is just one of six U.S. referees who will be working at the men’s and women’s soccer tournaments from Aug. 6-24. He will be an assistant referee in the 16-team men’s competition.
Quisenberry, 39, got his start in soccer playing for Sawyer Youth Soccer in Louisville and became a referee at age 14. It wasn’t long before his potential was recognized by local USSF national referees Brian Darling and John David McGee, who mentored him in his formative years. He has officiated at numerous Major League Soccer games and international matches.
Quisenberry went to Male High School and Murray State University. He is now an athletic trainer and teacher at Taylor Middle High School in Pierson, Fla.
His parents, Estelle and Gordon, are longtime soccer administrators and are heavily involved in the officiating program in the area, while his brother Mark is also a longtime soccer official.
Watch out for my interview with Quisenberry closer to the Olympics.
NET-SURFERS TRYOUTS
Net-Surfers will be holding tryouts for girls on the grounds of Graceland Baptist Church (Kamer Miller Road, New Albany) on May 29, June 2 and June 6.
First up are the tryouts for the U9 and U10 academies on May 29, with registration from 6-6.30 p.m. and training until 8 p.m.
Net-Surfers’ director of coaching, Dave Smith, said the academy is not recreational soccer.
“It is not cheap and will require dedication,” he said. “At the same time, we are not trying out girls and making cuts. We will not turn any girl away that is serious about wanting to become a better player. The academy is about developing players in a fun, fast-paced and challenging environment.”
Tryouts for the U11-U13 teams will be held on Tuesday, June 3 and Thursday, June 5, and it will be the turn of the U14-U17s on Monday, June 2 and Friday, June 6. Registration for both is 6-6:30 p.m., with tryouts following from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, applications will be taken for the U6-U8 academy on May 29 (6 p.m.) at the same venue. There are no tryouts for the academy, which will train twice a week for 60 minutes.
