Dorothy Spickard Heath Carter, 95; formerly of New Albany

Funeral services for Dorothy Spickard Heath Carter, 95, formerly of New Albany, will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 7, at St. Marks United Church of Christ, 222 E. Spring St., New Albany, with burial in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park. She died Monday, June 30, 2008, at the home of her daughter, Marianne Heath Doyle, Zionsville.

She was born Dec. 3, 1913, to the late William Porterfield and Stella Clift Spickard of Crider, Caldwell County, Ky. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Western State Teacher’s College, Bowling Green, Ky., in 1936 and a Master’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Louisville. She married Marion E. Heath in 1937. She taught music in public schools in Kentucky and Indiana, retiring in 1977. After the death of her first husband, she married Robert E. Carter of New Albany. Upon his death, she moved to Zionsville, to be near her daughter and family. She was active in the music community in southern Indiana since 1946. As choir director for First Baptist Church and St. Marks United Church of Christ, New Albany, she also served as choral director and music teacher for Nathaniel Scribner Middle School till her retirement in 1977. Her memberships include, St. Marks United Church of Christ, Alpha Club, Amaranth, Jennie Gephardt Hedden Music Study Club, Floyd County Retired Teachers and the Piankashaw Chapter of DAR. Piano teacher to hundreds, her last pupil was her great-grandson, Daniel Michael Doyle.

Survivors include her daughter, Marianne Heath Doyle; son-in-law, Guinn P. Doyle; grandsons, Noah V. and wife, Stephanie, Zionsville, James H., Indianapolis; great-grandsons, Daniel M., Max J. and Mason B., all of Zionsville; daughter-in-law, Judith L Heath, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; stepchildren, Robert Carter and wife, Sandy, Rosemary Danishek and husband, Rick, and Kay Whitehead and husband, Neil.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Marion E. Heath, and Robert E. Carter, and son, Michael S. Heath.

Visitation at Kraft Funeral Services, Spring Street Chapel, will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 6.

The family requests, upon her instructions, that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Arts Council of Southern Indiana, 820 East Market St., New Albany, 47150.
