A. Lyle Havens; 91, World War II U.S. Navy veteran
Funeral services for A. Lyle Havens M.D., 91, of Jeffersonville, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 9, at Scott Funeral Home’s North Chapel, Jeffersonville, with burial in Walnut Ridge Cemetery. He died Saturday, July 4, 2009, at his home.
He served in World War II in the intelligence branch of the U.S. Navy under Gen. “Wild Bill” Donovan of the O.S.S. He traveled with Donovan to China, where he served until the end of the war. After his discharge, he entered medical school under the GI Bill and graduated in 1951, during which time he held the title of class president his sophomore, junior and senior years. He graduated from the University of Louisville Medical School. He practiced in Jeffersonville since 1952, and now has five M.D.’s in the Havens Group Practice. In addition, he was instrumental in developing the Hillcrest Nursing Facility and, later, the Jeffersonville Medical Arts Building, which was the first multispeciality facility in Clark County. He was a member of the Jeffersonville Elks Club, the Indiana Medical Association, a city council member in the early 1960s, and served on the Board of Directors of the former Citizens Bank.
Survivors include his wife, the former Patricia Blesch, of Jeffersonville; six children, Mary Havens Fischer, of Jeffersonville, James M. Havens, M.D., of Jeffersonville, Walter T. Havens, of Jeffersonville, Susan Jill Hedges and her husband, Jeff Frey, of Jeffersonville, Keith W. Hedges, of Jeffersonville, and Kelli Alane Havens, of Jeffersonville; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at the funeral home from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and after 9 a.m. Thursday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Clark County Family Health Clinic or to the American Red Cross. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
