EVENING NEWS CHEERS & JEERS: Oct. 3, 2009

CHEERS

... to the five finalists for the 2009 Clark County Woman of the Year contest sponsored by The Evening News and Kye’s, and the people who nominated them.

Nominees are: Joyce Dickson, of Henryville; Cathy Graninger, of Borden; Ruthie Jackson, of Charlestown; Jane Sarles, of Clarksville; and Marine Walls, of Jeffersonville. The winner will be announced at a dinner event Oct. 30. Tickets are available at The Evening News, Kye’s or by calling 812-283-6636.

CHEERS

... to Danny Jones, 48, of Charlestown. He recently found out he had a check for $212,000 coming his way from his insurance company, after a jury ruled the company’s suspicion of arson by Jones to his own house was unfounded.

And jeers to Erie Insurance Co. for saying it was odd that Jones was not at home when the fire occurred at about 5:30 — as if it’s illegal to run to the store early in the morning.

Jones was forced to live in a barn temporarily after the fire, but hopefully now will have enough cash to buy himself his dream home.

CHEERS

... to Clark County court case summaries now being available online. It’s a definite time-saver for the paper, area attorneys and judges and a lot of fun for noisy neighbors. Check it out at http://clark.nasaview.com

JEERS

... to those evil deer and their knack for darting out in front of cars. Just kidding folks.

And jeers to humans for encroaching on the habitat of deer and driving or killing off natural predators, so we have a huge race of mini-deer. But, mostly jeers to the type of encroachment where the car meets the deer in a collision.

A recent insurance company study shows car vs. deer accidents are up by 22 percent in Indiana in the last five years. They are most prevalent in October and November — normally during dusk hours — so look out and slow down when you are out on the road.

CHEERS

... to the upcoming opening of the moving Vietnam Wall at the Clark County 4-H Fairgrounds. It opens to the public Thursday and will remain visible around the clock through Oct. 12. Look for upcoming coverage in The Evening News, including Lindon Dodd’s column, coming Sunday.

READER CHEERS

... to local stores which provide wipes for their customers to use to sanitize carts prior to use. With the prevalence of cold and flu viruses, this is a wonderful service. Also, to Mr. Tom Gross for the redesigned Jeffersonville High School Web site with current news and announcements as well as a link to the daily JHS Report.

— Lori McCormick, Jeffersonville

... from the Millie Lee Mission Circle of First Church of God, 3311 Holmans Lane, Jeffersonville, to the congregation for all the donations. Many thanks to all the ladies for their hard work. Thanks to the two gentlemen who cooked the food for us. Thanks to Our Best Restaurant and its manager for their donations.

Special thanks to all who rented booths and to the community for coming out to support our group. All of our fundraisers will go to our community for Christmas baskets and gifts to children. A special thanks to brother Larry Conley for his support. Thanks to God for all funds raised. Thanks to Brenda Dorman and The Evening News for all the help.

READER JEERS

... regarding the sidewalk at 218 and 226 E. Maple Street, Jeffersonville. The 226 address is a rental property with three apartments. These sidewalks need to be replaced.

I am a walker along with mother’s pushing strollers, others pushing grocery carts, wheel chairs occupants and these sidewalks are a hazard and present a safety problem.

— Mary Ellen Kennedy, Jeffersonville
