CLARKSVILLE — With injuries to both his starting quarterback and key wide receiver, Clarksville coach Brad Troutman could only hope that he could make adjustments and have others step up.
Both things happened on Friday, but it made little difference as Brownstown amassed more than 600 yards of offense in a 63-26 victory.
“We’re pretty banged up and with our quarterback (Drew Farney) and our top receiver (Thomas Threatt) out you could tell at the beginning of the game that we were out of whack, out of sync,” Troutman said.
“We moved some people around in practice (to adjust) but you blinked tonight and it was 35-0. But the kids played really hard and that’s all I can ask of them.”
Brownstown (5-1, 4-1 MSC) scored on six straight possessions in the first half, failing only when the Generals Andrew Beyerle intercepted a Cam Cockerham pass just before halftime.
Clarksville (2-5, 1-5) found the end zone twice in the second quarter, on runs of 15 and 60 yards by Corey Bowens.
Leading 42-12 at halftime the Braves scored on both of their third quarter possessions, both on clock-eating drives as the Generals ran only five plays in the period.
Each team managed two fourth quarter touchdowns with Clarksville’s Nathan Masters scoring on runs of 13 yards and one yard.
When it was over, Brownstown had amassed 468 yards rushing, led by Teddy Stucker’s 139 yards on 14 carries while scoring on touchdowns on runs of 1-, 2- and 40-yards.
Seven different Braves totaled 30 yards or more rushing. Cockerham gained 65 yards on four carries, scoring on an 8-yard run and completed 9-of-15 passes for 154 yards, including a 55 yarder to Coley Brown. Brown caught four passes for 106 yards.
Most of Clarksville’s offense came from Bowens and Masters as Bowens gained 207 yards on 22 carries while Masters managed 62 yards on 12 carries.
“Corey has really been frustrated,” Troutman said. “He’s put up some big numbers in the past, but we’ve got four brand new guys on the offensive line. But they’re starting to come around.”
And about the injuries?
“We don’t know about Drew, he’ll have his knee looked at next week,” said Troutman. But Thomas will be ready on Friday.
Clarksville will host Crawford Co. next Friday.
“We haven’t won a home game this year and we need to get one for our fans,” Troutman said. “It’s senior night, we’ll be trying to send them out winners and hopefully propel ourselves into the playoffs. Every game is a learning experience, we’ll get to the point where we can put four good quarters together.”
