EVENING NEWS Cheers and Jeeers - Nov. 7, 2009

CHEERS

... to Rock Creek Christian Academy
for moving a step closer this week to being granted charter school status by Ball State University.

The private school in Sellersburg has been struggling with enrollment numbers — something charter status might help. Because charter schools cannot have connections to religious groups, the school would be renamed Rock Creek Community Academy and be the first charter school in the area.

A major attraction to parents is that students would be able to attend Rock Creek for no tuition fee.

CHEERS

... to the groundbreaking this week for Rauch Inc.’s Hawthorne Glen in Clark County.
It’s the first phase of work that will build 18 homes for people with physical and mental disabilities to live in supported housing, so they can develop independence in the community.

The homes will house three people per residence, and will allow each person to have their own bedroom and bathroom, but share common living spaces such as kitchens and living rooms. Individuals living in the homes together will be placed based on compatibility, activities they like to do and things like whether they are a day or a night person.

Call 812-945-4063 or visit rauchinc.org for more information.

CHEERS

... to two Southern Indiana volleyball squads competing today for a chance at a state championship.
Congratulations, win or lose, to Silver Creek and Floyd Central high schools.

CHEERS

... to Toys “R” Us. It did not go unnoticed that in the circular found in The Evening News on Sunday, Toys “R” Us went one more step in tearing down stereotype barriers as a reflection of our children.

This ad acknowledged that we are all a little different by picturing two challenged children posing alongside advertised toys. Way to go Toys “R” Us.

— Circulation Director Mike Massek

CHEERS

... to the state for allowing students and high schools to submit transcripts for college admission online. After signing up for an account, students can now send transcripts to multiple possible college destinations at once. After an initial learning curve, students and school faculty members seem to like the service.

They should, as it’s described as fairly easy and free — and about 140,000 transcripts have been sent out using the service already.

CHEERS

... to three times as many Jeffersonville High School students taking Advanced Placement courses this year, as compared to seven years ago, according to a Friday Evening News article.

These courses give area teenagers who want to attend a university a head start before they arrive at campus for their first day as a college student.

JEERS

... to the end of the Major League Baseball season.
