Clark County seats up for grabs

Meyer faces two challengers in primary for commissioner’s seat

Clark County residents will see some interesting political races in 2008. With two county commissioner’s seats up for grabs and three at-large county council seats, there could be a significant shift in leadership for next year.

Commissioner Ed Meyer is seeking re-election in the first district, though he has three opponents vying for his seat, one a current councilman.

Councilman at-large R. Monty Snelling, the only Republican in the race, is running for the first district commissioner’s seat. Eric Hedrick and Greater Clark County Schools Board President Bob McEwen will compete in the Democratic primary with Meyer.

With Commissioner Ralph Guthrie retiring, six county residents are running for the second district commissioner’s seat. County council President David Abbott and Councilman Jack Coffman are competing against each other in the race. As the only Republican in the election, Coffman won’t find out who his opponent is until the general elections begin. Abbott is competing against four fellow Democrats in the primary race for District 2 commissioner. Keith Coats, Leslie Young and Don Guthrie also filed by the noon deadline Friday.

Six county residents are competing for three councilman at-large seats. Incumbents Danny Yost and Chuck Moore are in the running to retain their seats on the council, and Perry Smith, Kevin Vissing, Tom Campbell and Charlie Milburn are looking to take a seat on the council as well.

Danny Yost and Steve Doherty won’t compete in a primary because they’re the only two Republicans in the race.
