Last day to register to vote is Oct. 6

STAFF REPORTS
newsroom@newsandtribune.com

The last day to register to vote for the Nov. 4 election is Monday. Registration applications must be received in the Floyd County Clerk’s office, by mail or in person, by the close of business. The office is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• Voters who have completed an absentee application to receive a ballot by mail should be receiving them soon. More than 500 were mailed on Sept. 29 and more each day after.

The deadline for the clerk’s office to receive an application for absentee by mail is Oct. 27.

• Voters may check their registration status as well as find the location of their polling place by visiting the Floyd County Clerk’s Web site, www.floydcounty.in.gov/resident/electionsoffice.htm . There is also other valuable information posted for voters and candidates.

• Monday is also the first day to vote in person in the Floyd County Clerk’s office. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The office, which is located on the second floor of the City-County Building, will also be open for voting purposes on Saturdays, Oct. 25 and Nov. 1, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. You may also download an absentee voter application from the county Web site.

• New on the ballot this year are changes for Floyd Superior Court and Floyd County Court. Last year the legislature approved the following for Floyd County: The current Floyd Superior Court will be known as Floyd Superior Court No. 1; the current Floyd County Court will be known as Floyd Superior Court No. 2; and a new court will be established which will be known as Floyd Superior Court No. 3.

Each Court will be listed on the ballot separately.

• On the back side of the ballot, the last question relates to a local question: “Should the assessing duties of the elected township assessor in the township be transferred to the county assessor?” Voting YES will eliminate the office, voting NO will keep it.

• Voters will be required to present photo identification in order to vote. The ID must meet all the following criteria: 1. Display the voter’s name; 2. Display the voter’s photo; 3. Contain an expiration date, and either be current, or have expired after Nov. 7, 2006; 4. Be issued by the State of Indiana or the U.S. Government.

In most cases, an Indiana driver’s license, Indiana photo ID card, U.S. passport or Military ID will suffice. The law requires the Bureau of Motor Vehicles to issue an Indiana ID card free of charge, as long as the voter is able to present sufficient identifying documentation. More information about the photo ID law is available at www.PhotoID.in.gov

• Some misconceptions have been circulating this election cycle according to Floyd County Clerk Linda Moeller. The correct information is: 1. If you have been convicted of a criminal offense and your sentence is completed you can register to vote and vote. 2. Receiving a mortgage foreclosure does not prevent you from registering to vote and voting. 3. No political material is allowed in the polling site.
