Clarksville superintendent prepares for changes

Fisher says he wants to meet with other taxing agencies to prepare for Jan. 1 property tax changes

Changes are on the horizon for all agencies that rely on property tax funds for their organizations.

One such agency is Clarksville Community Schools Corp.

CCSC will be among the many who will need to know what changes are in store as of Jan. 1, when the property tax law changes take effect.

Superintendent Steve Fisher has said before that he has asked many people for information on what’s to come, yet he has heard no definitive answers.

“I’m just not happy in terms of what I’m getting,” he told the CCSC board during Tuesday night’s meeting. “Somebody’s got to step up and I’m going to be that somebody.”

He said he is going to sit down with the various groups in Clark County that will be effected by this change.

“The goal is to come up with a game plan,” Fisher said after the meeting. “I don’t want to sit back and wait (until Jan. 1) to see what happens.”

Tuesday’s planning meeting was the first with the newly hired assistant superintendent, Kimberly Knott. She said she has already started to work on a budget timeline and will bring forward a draft for the board to review soon.

Also at the meeting, board member Mike Kane expressed concern about the outdoor area around Greenacres Elementary becoming a “hot spot” at night, with people loitering in the area. Fisher said he has not heard any reports of vandalism or other issues arising from that. However, he said he will look into posting more signs to keep people away and inform police of the loitering issue.

Fisher told the board of a few recommendations he plans on making at the group’s next meeting on July 8. Those include: approving textbook rental fees, approving a childcare agreement with the YMCA and approving some new hires, transfers, a resignation and a dismissal of an employee.

Also at the next meeting, the board is scheduled to present the Business and Civic Awards.

The next school board meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. at Clarksville Middle School.
