Vandals strike at Jeffersonville High School

Graffiti spray-painted in cafeteria; fire extinguisher used

The Jeffersonville Police Department is investigating vandalism that occurred Friday night or early Saturday morning inside Jeffersonville High School.

A worker arrived just after 7 a.m. Saturday to find spray paint on the brick wall outside the cafeteria area and throughout the hallways and in classrooms at JHS, according to a police report.

Sports photographs were painted over, and graffiti was sprayed in the cafeteria. The suspects also reportedly discharged a fire extinguisher in the woodshop area and into one classroom, covering a teacher’s computer and telephone.

The police report notes that doors on the south side of the building were unlocked because of construction and video cameras in the school were not operating due to the construction.

Steve Hobgood, director of facilities for Greater Clark County Schools, said he has used contractors and people who work for Greater Clark to paint over the graffiti, saying most of the cover-up has been completed.

Hobgood said he’s unsure of how much it will cost to repair all the damage. He added that this does not adversely affect the renovation schedule at the high school.

JPD Detective Todd Hollis said the case has been assigned to a detective and is under investigation. He said police have no other information that can be released at this time. No arrests have been made.
