On Tuesday, the Silver Creek baseball team learned to never stop believing, going on a long journey in beating Borden 5-3 in 10 innings.

The band Journey, that is.

“All season long, my guys have been really into the band Journey,” said Silver Creek coach Neil Coffman. “When they played ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ between innings, we knew good things were about to happen.”

They did, as the Dragons scratched out two runs in the top of the 10th frame and then held off their West Clark rivals for the victory.

Brendan Chwalek picked up the victory on the mound for Silver Creek, who also doubled. Jeremy Blandford doubled and homered in the loss for Borden.

The Dragons will travel to Corydon on Thursday, April 24.

• Clarksville’s Wilbert dominates South Central: Senior pitcher T.J. Wilbert threw a one-hit shutout, leading host Clarksville to a 10-0 win over South Central in six innings. Wilbert went the distance, striking out 15 Rebels and walking none.

The Generals’ Jon Bramer collected three hits and two RBIs. Also for Clarksville (3-6), Keegan Price had two hits and two RBIs and Tyler Merchant smacked two hits.

“It was pretty much all T.J. Wilbert. He was in command,” said Generals coach Brian James, whose team stole nine bases. “We got out of the gates early. We set the tone the first couple of innings.”

Clarksville will travel to Seymour for a doubleheader on Saturday.

SOFTBALL

• Henryville clubs Trinity Lutheran: The host Hornets got home runs from Ashley Dickerson and Amanda Embry and a big effort on the mound from Kelcey Pierce to dominate Trinity Lutheran, 12-0.

Pierce moved out from behind the plate to toss a one-hit shutout. She also had nine strikeouts.

“We got everyone in and everyone hit the ball well,” said Henryville coach Jenny Odle.

Henryville (8-0) will host Pekin Eastern on Friday.

• Generals fall to MSC foe: Host Clarksville fell to 7-4 on the season after suffering a 5-2 loss to North Harrison in a Mid-Southern Conference game.

The Generals fell into a 5-0 hole after the first four innings and could never recover. Clarksville strung together four straight hits, but could only muster two runs during a sixth-inning rally.

“We just couldn’t get a baserunner,” said Clarksville coach Tim Hauber. ‘We scattered our hits and never got anything going offensively.”

Amber Wingler took the loss on the mound for the Generals, who will travel to Charlestown on Thursday.

• Floyd wins another close one: For the second time this week, the Highlanders squeaked out a one-run victory, getting the go-ahead score from Jenna Mackin in the fifth inning to beat Salem, 1-0.

Sam McClure (1-0) pitched four innings in the win for Floyd, striking out eight and issuing two walks. Randa Harbison pitched the final three innings for her third save, striking out six.

The Highlanders (5-1) fell behind in the bottom of the third, but plated runs in the third and fourth innings. Katie Phillips had an RBI single in the fourth. Mackin moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Bailey Hubert, scampering home when the ball got away from Salem’s catcher in the fifth.

“The fact that we’re winning shows me that the girls are willing to battle to the end,” said Floyd coach Joe Witten.

Floyd Central hosts Madison today.

• Bulldogs break slump: After two losses in last Saturday’s New Albany Invitational, the Bulldogs recovered by dumping host Seymour, 6-1.

It was another solid outing for New Albany pitcher Faith Griffaw, who gave up just four hits in her fourth victory of the season.

Paige Wells tripled in the victory for the Bulldogs (4-3).

New Albany will travel to archrival Jeffersonville today.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

• Floyd falls in Bloomington: The Highlanders swept both doubles matches, but dropped all three singles contests in losing to Terre Haute North in Bloomington.

Emma LaDuke and Kayla Prusinski teamed up for a 6-3, 6-2 win over Paige Cook and Brittany Duthereertson in the No. 1 doubles match, while Jessica Van Winkle and Alyssa Dotkins likewise handled Katie Bhenke and Becky Ackley in the two doubles spot.

The closest singles match was at No. 3, where Floyd’s Chelsea Burch lost 6-3, 6-2 to Morgan Mills.

The Highlanders visit South Oldham today.

TRACK

• Bulldog boys, girls dominate Providence: The New Albany girls swept 13 of 15 events in downing Providence 96-27 in a dual meet, while the boys’ team took a similar path in beating the Pioneers 92-31.

Hali Alexander led New Albany by winning three events on the girls’ side. The Bulldog boys took 11 individual events, with Melvin Posey winning the 100- and 200-meter dashes for New Albany.

Oliver Book won the 800 and 1600 for Providence, while teammate Eean Huffman took the discus and finished second in the shot put.

The New Albany and Providence boys will compete in the Floyd Central Invitational on Friday. The New Albany and Providence girls will be in the Jeffersonville Invitational on Friday.
