HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: Jeff ties with Carmel Ill. in first game of tourney

By MATT CRESS
Matthew.Cress@newsandtribune.com

The Jeffersonville baseball team opened the 2008 National High School Baseball Tournament without victory or defeat. Instead, Jeff found itself in the middle by earning a tie.

Jeff and Carmel Catholic (Il.) found themselves knotted 4-4 at the end of the two-hour time limit for pool-play games. It was the opener for both teams in Pool A, which also includes Kentucky schools in Lone Oak and Manual.

The top two teams in each pool advance to the winner’s bracket; the bottom two will compete in a consolation tournament. Pool B consists of Trinity, Oldham County and Central High School.

Jeff will still have a chance to advance to the winner’s bracket, beginning that quest tonight at tournament site Don Poole Field. The Red Devils will meet Lone Oak at 7 p.m. The Pool A finale for Jeff will be on Friday, when it meets Manual at 4:30 p.m.
