Six area players, including two from Jeffersonville High School, have earned honorable-mention honors on the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association All-State teams.
The two Red Devils who made the Class 4A squad were senior Tony Moore and junior Cody Poole. Moore compiled a 6-0 record as a member of the Jeff pitching staff and was one of the Red Devils’ best offensive players. He has signed a scholarship to play baseball next season at Georgetown (Ky.) College, an NAIA school.
Poole led Jeff in home runs this past season, helping the Devils win the Floyd Central Sectional title.
Charlestown senior Clayton Merschbrock made the 3A honorable-mention list. Merschbrock aided the Pirates to a 15-7 mark in 2008. They lost in the first round of the Mitchell Sectional to Salem, 6-3.
Merschbrock, along with his twin brother Zach, will play basketball next year at Franklin College.
Providence senior Johnelle Hardin earned a spot on the 2A honorable-mention team. Hardin was one of the top hitters on the Pioneers’ 17-9 squad. Providence’s season ended in the Austin Sectional semifinals to the host Eagles, 9-0. Hardin will continue his baseball career next season at NCAA Division I Western Kentucky.
Borden senior Jeremy Blandford and Christian Academy of Indiana junior Trey Haendiges made the Class A honorable-mention list.
Blandford was the leader on the mound and the field for the 13-11 Braves, who lost a 15-inning, first-round game to South Central in the Borden Sectional 3-2.
Haendiges was the ace of the Warriors’ staff this season, compiling a 6-3 record. Christian Academy had a 12-13 record this year, falling to Henryville in the Borden Sectional final 10-0.
