Big inning propels Jeff/GRC past HYR

Leading Highlander Youth Recreation 3-2 after two innings, Jeffersonville 11-12 All-Star coach Derek Ellis pulled his team aside.

Ellis was unhappy with his team’s offense, which had produced 23 runs in Jeff’s first two games.

He felt it was time to vocalize his displeasure.

“I just told the guys that they needed to be more aggressive and swing the bats with some intensity,” Ellis recounted. “Everyone was coming up there too relaxed. I didn’t like the way we were swinging the bats. I got on them a little bit and it seemed to work.”

In the third inning, Jeffersonville sent 18 batters to the plate. The first 10 reached base and scored. The final tally was 13 runs and a 16-3 victory.

The impressive part of the inning was that Tyler Sariscany, who didn’t even start for Jeff, hit two line drive doubles and knocked in five runs.

“Top to bottom, all 11 players can step up and hit the ball, and Tyler did an awesome job off the bench of hitting the ball where it was pitched,” Ellis said. “Two balls into the gap, two doubles and five RBIs. It was great to see Tyler come through like that.”

Jeff moved to 3-0 — tied with New Albany atop the pool play standings — and all but clinched a spot in next Monday’s championship game.

Ellis said that fact won’t influence the way he coaches or the way his team plays.

“Nothing changes,” he said. “We’re going to approach every game like it’s our last.”

Drew Ellis hit another home run in the game, his fifth in three contests. Chandler Dale had two RBIs and scored twice, and Hayden Robb had a two-RBI double in a three-run first inning.

• New Albany 10, Clarksville 1: Like Jeffersonville, New Albany nearly clinched a spot in the 11-12 title game after a 10-1 win over Clarksville.

Also like Jeffersonville, it took New Albany some time to pull away from its opponent.

New Albany led 1-0 after two innings before putting up three runs in the third and five more in the fourth.

Peter Steinsberger went 2-for-2, including a home run, for New Albany. Grant Goad and Kyle Landrum each scored twice for the victors.

Nick Hayes scored Clarksville’s only run after a fourth-inning single.

9-10 Baseball

• HYR joined New Albany at 3-0 in the 9-10 All-Star tournament with an 11-2 victory over Charlestown.

HYR scored in each of the first five innings to continually pull away from its opponent.

Evan Cambron led HYR by going 3-for-4, including a first-inning double. He had four RBIs and scored twice. Jared Harvey went 2-for-2 with two singles and two walks. He also scored twice.

Justin Farris and David Rodriguez led Charlestown. Farris reached base three times and scored both of Charlestown’s runs. Rodriguez had a single, two walks and an RBI.

• Clarksville looked poised to win its first 9-10 All-Star game, leading Silver Creek 7-2 in the third inning when lightning caused the game to be postponed. The remainder of the game will be played at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Each scheduled day of the 9-10 tournament will be pushed back one day.

13-14 Baseball

• New Albany stayed in the title hunt in the 13-14 tournament with a 13-8 win over Silver Creek.

New Albany broke an 8-8 tie by scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. It is now 2-1, a game behind HYR and a half-game behind Jeffersonville, which it has yet to play.

Damon Nelson led New Albany by going 3-for-4 with two first-inning RBIs and a run scored. Zach Worrall went 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored. Brenden Popson had a double and two RBIs. Matthew Jones came off the bench and went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs.

Lucas McIntyre led Silver Creek by going 3-for-5 with two doubles. He had a hit in his first three at-bats.

Brooks Bowling had two hits, a runs and an RBI.

• Unbeaten Jeffersonville was leading Clarksville 8-0 in the third inning when lightning forced the game to be called for the night. The remainder of the game will be played at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

13-14 Softball

• Silver Creek won its opener in the 13-14 softball tournament — 9-3 over Jeffersonville — and is now the only unbeaten team in the three-team field.
