The Floyd Central and Jeffersonville boys’ tennis teams each split their two matches in Saturday’s Jeff Double Dual Invitational.
The 14th-ranked Highlanders defeated No. 18 Castle 3-2, but suffered a 3-2 setback against Bloomington North. As for the Red Devils, they defeated Bloomington North 3-2, but lost to Castle 4-1.
Against the Knights, Floyd’s Ben Boesing breezed to a No. 1 singles win over David Butterfield (6-0, 6-0) and teammate Adam Struble won at No. 2 singles in three sets (7-5, 5-7, 7-5). At No. 2 doubles, the Highlander tandem of Luke Schrieber and Ryan Smith prevailed 6-0, 6-3.
Winners for Floyd against North were Struble at No. 2 singles and Tej Azad at No. 3 singles.
The only Jeff player to win two matches was sophomore Patrick Elliott at No. 1 singles. Elliott won by an injury default over North’s Ray Leonard, who retired after pulling a stomach muscle midway through the first set. In his other match, Elliott cruised past Butterfield, 6-0, 6-4.
The Red Devils’ other two wins against North were Nathan Cross at No. 3 singles and Ryan Lewis and Joseph Nikitas at No. 2 doubles.
“It was a great day of tennis for all the teams and for Jeffersonville I can see where our team needs some improving,” Red Devil head coach Mark Reilly said. “But for us to compete the way we did today, I think are guys will start believing in their ability to go out and play their own game. Sometimes when you compete against excellent teams, you don’t play your game and you start doing things that you are not capable of doing on a consistent basis.”
The Highlanders will play in the Zionsville Invitational next Saturday. Jeff will visit Jennings County on Thursday, followed by the Jasper Invitational next weekend.
