In a possible preview of the Class 2A Pekin Eastern Sectional, the Providence volleyball team knocked off second-ranked Brownstown in the Pioneer Invitational at the Larkin Center Saturday, 22-25, 23-25, 25-21, 28-26, 15-7.
Fifth-ranked Providence also defeated Class A No. 10 Morristown, 25-12, 25-13, 25-16.
On the day for the Pioneers (16-8), Ashley Ricks had 21 kills and Elizabeth Endris made 92 assists. “The word that comes to mind about today is ‘Wow,’” Providence head coach Terri Purichia said. “We played some great volleyball. Defensively, we played as hard as we possibly could.
“The Brownstown match was such a great match by both teams. The defensive plays were outstanding. Our team showed so much heart and character being down 0-2 and storming back to take the last three games of the match.”
The Pioneers will host 4A No. 7 New Albany on Tuesday.
