TRIBUNE ROUNDUP: New Albany volleyball downs Silver Creek

The New Albany volleyball team rebounded from a loss to Providence earlier in the week by dropping Silver Creek in three games at The Doghouse 25-12, 25-17, 25-13 on Senior Night.

It was also a homecoming for former Bulldog assistant Jeff Zimmerman, now the head coach of the Dragons.

The three New Albany seniors — Brandi Waller, Tiffany Owens and Emily Knight — led the way in the victory. Waller had 17 kills to pace the Bulldog attack.

Candace Timberlake served 10 aces to go with 15 digs for New Albany.

“Senior Night is always emotional,” said New Albany coach John Breeding. “I thought the three seniors played outstanding, and I thought the team played exceptionally well.

“We like where we’re at right now heading into the sectionals.”

New Albany will travel to Heritage Hills next Thursday.

• Pioneers fall at Manual: On the heels of Tuesday’s emotional win over New Albany, Providence dropped a road matchup with Manual, 29-27, 25-18, 27-25.

Ashley Ricks led the Pioneers with eight kills. Laura Der had 13 digs in the loss for Providence, while Elizabeth Endris had eight digs and passed for 20 assists.

“We have had an intense week beating both Brownstown and New Albany in five games within four days,” said Providence coach Terri Purichia. “I was afraid we may come out flat tonight and my fears came true. Our team is resilient and we will bounce back for our trip to Clinton Prairie on Saturday.”



GIRLS’ SOCCER

• Nash, Bulldogs edge Meade County: Mackenzie Nash had three goals to lead visiting New Albany past Meade County, 4-3.

Two of Nash’s scores came off free kicks, with the other coming off a corner kick. Kayton Cole added the other score in the win for the Bulldogs.

Bulldog goalkeeper Taylor Briscoe had seven saves.

New Albany will now look to the postseason, where it will meet Providence in the first round of the Jeffersonville Sectional on Tuesday. • Providence shuts out Mercy: Casey Marlin had two goals to lead the host Pioneers past Mercy Academy on Senior Night, 4-0.

Laura Jenkins took an assist from Nicole Walsh for the game’s first goal less than two minutes in, while Marlin’s first score made it 2-0 at halftime. Providence had just three shots on goal in the first half, converting two.

Marlin struck again at the 26:35 mark of the second half, and Jenkins returned the favor with an assist to Walsh to close the scoring.

It was the final match for five Pioneer seniors, including Jenkins, Hillary Forsee, Mariah White, Walsh and Christina Boisseau.

Providence will travel to Oldham County on Saturday.



CROSS COUNTRY

• Bulldogs boys, girls first at invite: Led by a fourth-place finish from Pryce Ragains, three other Bulldogs found the top 10 as New Albany ended up tops in the team standings at the Providence Invitational.

Floyd Central saw Cory Portwood post its best performance by finishing 11th and the Highlanders had five runners cross in the top 16 to take second. Home School Union, Providence, Jeffersonville, Borden, Charlestown, DeSales and Henryville followed.

Providence’s Oliver Book won the boys’ race, while teammate Jake Ford was fifth.

Stephanie Cave and Kim Condra were second and third, respectively, as the New Albany girls also won the team competition. Floyd Central, led by a ninth-place effort from Hannah Keehn, was second.

Home School Union’s Hannah Rucker was the overall champion, but the Tommies did not have enough runners to record a team score. Providence finished in third place overall.
